USA did not request extradition for Saatio prior to his escape

June 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The escape of American John Wesley Saatio alerted security authorities in Costa Rica.

Despite being a dangerous and violent criminal, the United States had not issued the extradition order to repatriate the convict.

Saatio was arrested in Jacó on June, 3rd. However, two weeks later he broke the detention module where he was held and escaped. He originally escaped the United States’ justice on June 19th, 2015 when he was being escorted from the County Courthouse in Houghton.

Gladys Jimenez, Director of Immigration, confirmed that an immigration alert was issued to try and locate him, which implies an international warrant before the Interpol.

For any report on his whereabouts, please contact the 9-1-1 or the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) at 800-8000-645.
