What is the Tuxtla Summit?

March 27, 2017 by Staff News Writer

From March 27th to 29th, Costa Rica will host the Summit of heads of state and government of the Tuxtla Mechanism for Dialogue and Coordination.

Everything is ready to receive Presidents and Heads of State of the 10 member countries.

But what is the Tuxtla Summit? It is a mechanism of dialogue and international cooperation that was born in 1991 with the participation of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

It bears this name because the first meeting was held in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez in Mexico, in honor of General Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez, who encouraged the annexation of Chiapas to Mexico.

In 2006, this event was formalized when Belize and Panama joined, and in 2009 Colombia and the Dominican Republic were added to the list of member countries.

This year, the country will host the Summit for the third time, under the slogan “Mesoamerica unites us”, which will highlight the potential of public-private partnerships.

In addition, the meetings between heads of state will also focus on security and drug trafficking issues.

Some of the achievements of these summits are:

-The International Mesoamerican Highway Network
-The Central American Telecommunications Network
-Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for the modernization of 11 border crossings
-The Mesoamerica without hunger project.
