Surfer and girlfriend drown on beach in Esterillos

A couple drowned on Sunday in Playa Esterillos Este, Parrita, after a strong wave broke the surfboard, which they shared and dragged the two under water.

Carlos Cabezas Alpizar, age 24 was found dead on Monday in Bejuco beach. The body of his girlfriend, an unnamed minor was found minutes after the accident, on Esterillos beach. Coast guard and red cross searched for the man on Sunday, but called off their effort at sunset.

In 2013, the Red Cross reported the deaths of 84 people by aquatic accidents in Costa Rica. These include the drowning of 65 year old U.S. citizen, Michael McKinsckly who fell off his boogie board.
