Geologists rule out immediate risk for lahars in Poás

June 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

After the flight over Poás Volcano, personnel of the National Seismological Network (RSN) ruled out the early generation of lahars as a result of ash accumulation.

Lahars or sediment and water flows that slide from the volcanic slopes are a recurrent focus of concern for emergency authorities due to their possible destructive impacts.

The study was done by geologists Paulo Ruiz, Gerardo Soto and Mauricio Mora.

In the ravines and rivers outside the crater there was no significant accumulation of ash to suggest the early generation of lahars. However, this cannot be ruled out as the eruption progresses,”

stated the geologists.

On the crater’s lake, the entity explained that there is still a ‘small remnant’ of liquid that could disappear if the rate of evaporation is higher than the contribution of rainwater.
