Beware! Burglaries increase during the holiday season

January 9, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Each month, judicial authorities receive from 70 to 80 reports of burglaries in cantons near the metropolitan area of San José.

According to the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), that figure tends to increase during the holidays.

Eddy Roda, head of the office of assaults, robberies and thefts at the OIJ, made a list of the vulnerable sites and locations:

-Santa Ana.
-Escazú.
-Curridabat (Pinares).
-Moravia.
-Guadalupe.
-Sabanilla.

The official asked the population to double security measures to prevent houses from being targeted by criminals. One of the main recommendations, if leaving on vacation, is to entrust the care of the house to someone close, so that person could turn lights on at night or check the status of the door locks. In addition, he urged people to be careful when opening the doors at night and to create an alert system in the area so all neighbors work together to face crime.
