Cahuita sets the example with first 100% accesible beach

August 19, 2019 by Staff News Writer

In the Cahuita National Park, the sea is for everyone thanks to a project that created the first accessible beach for people with disabilities.

A 180-meter-long and 1.2-meter-wide walkway was placed from the entrance to the beach. It was made using plastic covers, a material that not all recyclers receive and pollute rivers and seas.

Companies, educational centers, government entities, people and different groups participated in this campaign. In total, 16 tons of plastic caps were collected.

We made the alliance with the Cahuita National Park because we found officials committed to the issue of accessibility. In addition, it is the only national park that operates under the co-management modality,”

said Rocío Echeverri, executive director of ProParques.

ProParques has been working on the improvement of protected wild areas for 13 years and since 2012 it has incorporated the issue of accessibility with the first two universal access trails in Costa Rica, in Carara National Park in 2012 and in Santa Rosa in the year 2016.

The Local Council made improvements to the complementary works and will be responsible for placing and dismantling the walkways daily, as well as having the amphibious chair available for those who need it.
