Costa Rica is joining violence trend in Central America

March 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica has jumped on a train of violence, blood and murder. During the last two years it broke records in the amount of homicides, and 2017 continues down that worrying path.

The Office of Plans and Operations (OPO) of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) calculates that this year the number of murders will exceed 600, a figures never seen before in the country.

Michael Soto Rojas is the head of the EPO and one of the investigators who best handles the criminal radiography of the country. According to him, the scenarios are not encouraging.

Before the end of the third month of this year there were more than 133 homicides. That is, almost two murders daily.

If projections are met, Costa Rica would reach a rate of 12 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, beating neighboring nations like Nicaragua and Panama.

It’s a very high and very bad number of malicious homicides. Almost two homicides a day,”

said Soto.

A study by the judicial police, with statistics from last year, reaffirms that about 30% of the killings are due to drug trafficking issues.

But Soto says this is an issue that will not be solved only with more police or convictions.
