Costa Rica is on the list: drug trafficking and production have increased in the country

According to a document presented by President Barack Obama to the United States Congress, Costa Rica in the list of countries with a high rate of drug trafficking and production. The document will be valid until 2017.

Countries like Afghanistan, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Burma, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru and Venezuela are also included on the list.

The presence on the list is not a reflection of the efforts or the level of cooperation of those governments in the fight against drugs, but to get to the US, cocaine is mainly trafficked by land, air and sea through Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Over the past decade, 97% of the cocaine reaching the US was smuggled in non-commercial maritime transport,”

stated the document, presented in Washington on Monday.

The document also warned about the increase of poppy cultivation for the production of opiates in Afghanistan, Laos and Burma.
