Costa Rican, Traditional Masquerade’s Day

October 31, 2016 by Staff News Writer

For 20 years, a great party, full of music, has been held each October 31st in Costa Rica.

A decree set October 31th as the “Costa Rican Traditional Masquerade’s Day” in order to prevent such an important part of our culture from being forgotten.

One of the places where it is always celebrated is Santo Domingo de Heredia and this year was not the exception: people from everywhere could enjoy the traditional parade that started on Santo Domingo Park.

The parade was born as an initiative from Cimarrona La Original Domingueña group because the tradition was about to be lost, since neither the Church nor the municipality wanted to organize activities. So decided to do so without help of any kind and we have succeeded,

declared Juan José Carazo, a member of the group.

And there were more options!

Liberia: The masquerades invaded Liberia Park on October 30th. Visitors could enjoy music by the Concert Band of Guanacaste and creations from 3 mask makers in the area.

Alajuela: in the Cultural Center, there were parades and cimarronas starting at noon, In addition, visitors will be able to enjoy from “El Cadejos” and “Una noche de sustos” plays by Dejavú Experimental Theatre. The plays will take place from 6 pm to 7 pm at the Center. Both activities are free.
