Magistrate endorses project to reduce trial duration

April 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Judge Carlos Chinchilla, president of the III Supreme Court of Justice, approved on Tuesday a bill that seeks to guarantee the principle of prompt and complete justice.

The initiative, led by legislator Mario Redondo, from the Christian Democratic Alliance, seeks to reduce the duration of the 5-year trials, on average, to 11 months and set deadlines for the processes.

According to Chinchilla, a trial lasts a very long time and it is not possible for a country to take 5 years to end a trial, and the cost for the State is very high: ¢ 6 million on average per case.

However, the judge suggested that the project not only includes complex processes, but also trials for organized crime.

The project is ambitious. But it can be done and we are willing to do it. It is a very good initiative. I am permanently related to this and I hope it becomes a law of the Republic,”

said Chinchilla.

The Attorney General of the Republic, Jorge Chavarría, insisted on the need to make a systemic criminal reform, but said he supports the initiative.

It’s an opportunity to start solving things,”

said Chavarría, though he emphasized the importance of naming more judges.
