Turrialba Volcano released ash on Wednesday

December 14, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Turrialba Volcano released sporadic ash emanations on Wednesday at 1:30 in the afternoon. According to the entity, the direction of the wind was towards the East with influence towards the Central Valley.

According to Geoffroy Avard, volcanologist of the Ovsicori-UNA,

this is a volcano with an open conduit, but this time it’s not releasing energy. They are just passive pulses that occasionally contain ash. For now, it is unknown if this situation occurred in the morning or previous days, because of the weather and the rain that was in the sector.”

The expert mentioned that this is part of the normal activity of the colossus,

however the possible causes could be due to the deep magma , but in very small quantity and almost undetectable. It could also be due to the rains that cause the fragmentation of the static magma and dissolving it in ash. However, until now the cause is unknown.”
