Poás ejects rocks up to 600 meters in the air

May 10, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The rocks ejected by Poás Volcano in its recent eruptions reached 600 meters in height, with speeds of up to 200 km/h.

This was determined by a ballistics analysis carried out by Volcanoes Without Borders scientists (VSF). According to the conclusions, the path that connects the viewpoint of the active crater with the Botos lagoon was impacted -at least- by 100 rocks with an average diameter of 18 centimeters.

The power of the material released was sufficient to break the concrete of the viewpoint or sink the metals of the protective barriers.

According to Gino González, a volcanologist from VSF, these findings may be decisive for defining an eventual reopening of the national park (closed since April 13th).

The seismic signal is still intense and shows no signs of decreasing.
