About 3,000 children and young people from downtown San José painted the Avenida Segunda with the patriotic and freedom colors: White, blue and red colors took control over the country to commemorate the 195th anniversary of the national independence.

With the participation of President of the Republic Luis Guillermo Solís, First Lady Mercedes Peñas and San José Mayor Johnny Araya, the traditional parade started.

Parades in Costa Rica to commemorate an event such as independence day, have a peculiarity: there are not soldiers with rifles, but children and young people who enjoy their freedom,

said Araya during his speech, and took the opportunity to encourage young people to continue fighting for a better country.

Luis Guillermo Solís thanked all those students who participated in the celebration activities:

It’s a happy day for the country.

Solis clarified that education budget won’t be reduced because they are working for the country’s development.

During his message, the president emphasized that independence is a social process that must be addressed by all because all citizens want a better future for the country.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Band of San José, that was in charge of the National Anthem, September 15th Anthem and La Patriótica Anthem.
